"You are only interested in living in the past," my mother says, as I nurse the future at my breast. "You want something written in blood from us," then she contradicts herself by saying, "you are unwilling to meet and discuss further."

My job now is to protect myself, protect my husband, protect my daughter. By my mother's own admission, all she will do now is say the words "things have changed, things are different" without putting forth any effort, or acknowledging her failings. Without the effort, without the remorse, she will continue the same patterns. There can be no lasting change without hard work.

I cannot sacrifice my daughter's wellbeing at the altar of their ignorance.
