It's a requirement for one of my classes that I spend fifty four hours observing children before the end of the semester. They range in age from birth to five years old. I thought, initially, that I'd spend time with the older children since it's more applicable to my job now. Ten minutes in the baby room and that changed, all of them crawling or laughing or sleeping.

This week, to catch up, I spent twelve hours there, feeding them and bouncing them and, when they got tired, rocking them to sleep. One little girl threw up on me three times in rapid succession, and I said, "Is she okay? Does she have a change of clothes?"

Children make me want to protect everything.
