<< [ Acts of Courage ] >>
I ran eleven and a half miles today. The last two and a half miles, my muscles seized up. The last two and a half miles were uphill. I walked half of it, and then four of the eight run club folks drove out and caught up with me. They drove next to me, and cheered me on as I did my little jog-shuffle-limp up the last mile. A blonde jogger passed me, bouncing. "Don't worry," said the girl on the passenger side of my support group, "she totally walked that hill."
I was the last one in, but practically forgot that as the group welcomed me in. A hero's welcome, but the hero wasn't me. It was them.
